About Palma City
Palma City is the main city on the island of Majorca. This beautiful city rich in history is located in the south of the island on the Bay of Palma. With a population of over 400,000 citizens, Palma Majorca is the twelfth largest urban area in Spain. The town is a favourite spot for many tourists and this is reflected by the over 22 million passengers who passed through its airport in 2009.
Palma Majorca was founded from a Roman camp established centuries ago. It has had several changes in governance after having several peoples owning it over the centuries. From the Romans to the Muslims to the Byzantines, various groups of people have had interest in Palma Majorca due to its strategic location in terms of trade. The name ‘Palma Majorca’ was adopted during the reign of James I of Aragon.
There are several places of interest to visit while in Palma Majorca. La Seu, its cathedral is one of these attractions. Built in the Middle Ages, (1229 - 1601), this magnificent feature is one not to miss while on a trip to the city. The old city in the south east part of Palma Majorca is a collection of interesting buildings that indicate the presence of Arab settlement in earlier centuries. There are also several parks within Palma Majorca where one can enjoy a really relaxing moment.
The public transport here consists of trains, buses and taxis. Depending on one’s fancy, you have the option of using any of these on your trip around the city. Palma Majorca’s main transportation hub is the Placa d'Espanya. From here one can get transportation to almost any point of the town. The Palma metro provides for a swift way of accessing the city centre. Bus routes are such that they pass through the historic centre allowing you to enjoy the scenery.
