About Palma Weather

Many tourists visit Palma de Mallorca, better known simply as Palma, throughout the year because of its reliably sunny weather, fantastic range of interesting shops, historic and cultural spots, excellent food and drink options and much more to enjoy. It’s a bustling city that is located on the south coast of the island of Mallorca, and it’s not only the largest city on the island but also its capital.

There are about 300 sunny days throughout the year in Palma, and you will likely get good weather regardless of the month when you visit. The autumn and winter months can have more clouds and some rain and wind, but should still be pleasant enough for most of your time in the city.

From June to mid-September is usually when the weather is at its sunniest and rainfall and humidity are not too high, so many tourists consider these months to be the ideal time for visiting Mallorca, particularly if they plan to spend a lot of time on the beach. By contrast, fewer people tend to come from mid-September to May because there’s less guarantee of warm weather without any rain.

Keep reading to learn more about what to expect from Palma’s climate throughout the seasons, which should help you with planning when you might want to book your holiday.

The climate throughout the year in Palma

When you’re planning for your vacation to Mallorca, it’s important to know what to expect from the weather all the way from January to December, as this will affect what you pack. In the summer months, you are less likely to need coats and long-sleeved shirts, for example, whereas in the winter months you are advised to pack warmer clothes and even a small umbrella if it fits in your suitcase.

Winter (December to February): Expect the sunshine to be at its lowest level throughout these months, and the temperatures will drop noticeably compared to the warmer months. Be sure to include some heavier jackets, pants and long-sleeve tops in your luggage because of the colder temperatures.

Spring (March to May): Daily temperatures and sunshine levels start to pick up at the start of this season, but there are still some cool or mild days, along with more regular rainstorms than during the summer months. This can be a great time to visit if you want a balance between warm days and colder nights, in which case pack a mix of clothes for both types of weather you will experience.

Summer (June to August): As mentioned above, this is the most popular among the seasons for tourists who want to get the best chance of constantly sunny weather. Some days may be very hot, reaching up to 38°C (100°F) but the heat is never unbearable, and it cools down at night. Pack light and loose-fitting clothes, and the chances of rain and thunder are relatively low.

Autumn/Fall (September to November): The chance of getting consistently sunny days without any rain starts to drop in September and progresses through to some noticeably chilly nights by mid-November. If you are planning to come during this time, there will be fewer tourists so that could be a bonus, but ensure that you pack cold weather clothes and an umbrella for your vacation.

Tips for deciding on which month to visit Palma on your holiday

Use the above information about the seasons to help guide you in selecting which month you would like to visit Palma. But another important tip is to also think about what you are hoping to do during your vacation, because those plans will also affect which month could be the best for your trip.

For example, if you are planning on doing many outdoor activities, such as hiking, then you might want to consider visiting in the spring when temperatures are milder than the hot summers. But if most of your itinerary will be indoors – such as visiting museums or trying out the many varied restaurants in and around the city – then you should be fine planning for a trip even in the winter.
