Know Before You Fly

Magaluf, which is a town on the Spanish island of Majorca, is a top holiday destination for many tourists in Europe and elsewhere around the world. One of the most popular ways that visitors get to Magaluf is by first flying into Palma de Mallorca Airport, which is also known either by its International Air Transport Association code of PMI or simply just as Palma Airport.

The airport is about 24 kilometers (or roughly 15 miles) from the center of Magaluf, so it’s not walking distance and you will need some kind of transportation to get between the two.

Thankfully, Palma Airport has three such options to help you and the right selection for your particular needs will depend on your budget and other factors like how long you’re willing to travel and whether you’re okay traveling with strangers. The three choices that are available from Palma Airport are renting a car, taking a taxi or riding on a public bus.

Travel times vary depending on the method you choose, but generally you can expect it to take about 25 minutes to get from the airport to the center of town. The journey may be quicker late at night and at other quiet travel times, or longer when it’s busy, such as during rush hour.

Renting a car

If you decide to rent a car the exact cost will depend on several elements such as the size of the vehicle which will differ based on how many travel companions you have, as well as the number of days that you’d like to rent the car and more.

Advantages of this way of traveling is that you’ll have complete independence with driving anywhere you want, as well as the security of knowing that your luggage is safe in the trunk and that you are riding with just your family and friends. Disadvantages include the fact that this is the most expensive of the three options.

Taking a taxi

Taxis offer good privacy for you and your traveling companions because the only people in the car will be you and the driver. Another pro of this choice is that, like renting a car, you’ll be able to go directly from the airport to the front door of your hotel or other destination in Magaluf. Your suitcases will also be safe in the trunk of the vehicle for the entire ride.

This option is a mid-price choice that’s a perfect balance between convenience and cost. Rates are charged by meter rather than a flat fare, so the longer distance you travel for your ride, the higher the fare will be. If you’re traveling between 7am and 9pm there’s a minimum fare of €3.12 and on top of that you’ll be charged €1.08 for every kilometer you travel. Between 9pm and 7am the minimum fare is €4 and the fee per kilometer is also slightly higher at €1.28.

Riding the bus

Taking a bus from Palma Airport to Magaluf is the cheapest option by far and is perfect for travelers on a budget or those who are not in a rush to get to the center of town. The bus will likely not drop you off at your exact destination in Magaluf, so you’ll have to plan on extra time to get from the airport to where you’re staying – perhaps even twice the time it takes by car.

But the benefit of traveling this way is that the fare should only be about €6 for a one-way ticket from the airport to town, and there won’t be any hidden fees like luggage surcharges.

You can take the A11 bus which is a direct journey from Palma Airport to Magaluf, but this service might not be operating during some months where tourism is quieter. If that’s the case, take the 547 bus in the direction of Arribades and then disembark at the Estaciò Intermodal stop, where you’ll wait to board either the 104 or the 107 bus that will take you to Magaluf.
